Item description from seller

Typed letter signed by Ernest Hemingway to the novelist and screenwriter Peter Viertel. Written from his home at the Finca Vigia near Havana, where he wrote much of For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea. One page on Hemingway’s printed onionskin stationery, dated September 6, 1948, headed in red “Finca Vigia, San Francisco de Paula, Cuba." Addressed “Dear Peter” and signed in pencil, “Papa,” with a few pencil corrections in his hand. Writing to a close friend, Hemingway moves from his dealings with the American Embassy, “Had taken the Embassy people out to Strengthen My Status,” to a comic account of the economies of leaving out a favorite expletive, to the actress Ingrid Bergman, of whom he writes that “she means something to me way past glamour pusses,” and at last to his health, reporting his weight and blood pressure and his “good chance to beat the rap.” He teases Viertel for moving so often that “You change addresses faster than a goat.” In fine condition with two horizontal mail folds, a few pencil corrections in Hemingway’s hand, and light creasing to the lower left corner. The recipient, Peter Viertel, was a novelist and screenwriter who met Hemingway in Idaho in the 1940s and remained a lifelong friend, later writing the screenplays for the film versions of The Sun Also Rises and The Old Man and the Sea, working uncredited on The African Queen, and in 1960 marrying the actress Deborah Kerr. A wonderful letter between two close friends. Ernest Hemingway (1899—1961) was one of the most influential American writers of the 20th century, whose concise prose style and exploration of universal themes reshaped modern literature. Known for his works such as The Old Man and the Sea, A Farewell to Arms, and For Whom the Bell Tolls, Hemingway developed a narrative voice that captured the complexities of human struggle and resilience with stark simplicity. His experiences as a journalist and participant in both World Wars deeply informed his writing, lending authenticity to his depictions of courage, loss, and alienation. While his personal life, marked by adventure and tragedy, often overshadowed his literary contributions, his stylistic innovations and engagement with existential themes solidified his status as a transformative figure in American letters. By pushing the boundaries of narrative form and emphasizing the power of understatement, Hemingway left an enduring legacy on both literature and the cultural understanding of the human condition.…
