This was Shobin's first novel, written while he was a practicing physician. Warmly inscribed by the author to the prior owner on the front endpaper in June 1987. Published during the boom in medical thrillers following the success of Robin Cook's "Coma," the book sold well in hardcover and led to a series of follow-up novels by Shobin over the next two decades. Though never adapted into a film, the novel reflects the era's anxieties around in-vitro fertilization, genetic intervention, and medical ethics.
