Octavo. 194pp. [1]. Illustrated white and yellow dust jacket, with black and yellow lettering on the covers and spine. Printed yellow and white wrappers. Signed, with a dated 4-line inscription by the author in pen on the front free endpaper. This is the first edition of famed Catalan writer Pere Calder's memoir of his experiences fighting for the Republican cause during the Spanish Civil War. The story starts from recruitment and continues through the time when the soldiers reach the front. The narrative culminates with the infamous Battle of Teruel. The work is illustrated throughout with woodcut engravings in brown by Spanish artist Enric Cluselles (1914-2014) at the start of every chapter. The work was financially sponsored by the Catalan Institute of Letters, and was the author's last work published in Spain before his 20-year exile in Mexico. Text throughout in Catalan. Dust jacket with some light rubbing to extremities and some minor smudges to the covers. Wrappers with some light foxing and smudges to the back cover. Pages throughout age toned, with a small closed tear along the side margin of p.9. Dj, wrappers and interior all in very good condition overall. A nice and quite clean copy.
