Interesting English, pre-First World War novel. *** 'Valentine Barat was English, very English, English in all his ideas, sympathies, prejudices, a very John Bull mentally. But all the same he had something of a foreign air, a heritage, no doubt, from some ancestor whom his father had forgotten, or of whom he knew too little to speak. Valentine would have asked for information, would have searched for it in his talk with his father, but the older man didn't invite such intimate conversation.' (from the beginning of Chapter I). ***Grant Richards was a (now relatively little-known) innovative British publisher and author, publishing poetry, classics, art, children's literature, natural history and popular science. Amongst others, he published G.K. Chesterton, Bernard Shaw, James Joyce, A. E. Housman, Frank Harris and Richard la Gallienne. He was born in 1872, and supported a number of talented writers. He set up the World's Classics Series in 1901. He died in 1948. ***A very hard to find book, and even rarer signed. *** For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***.
