First edition. 8vo. Cloth, decorated front and rear endpapers, 346 pp., frontis., foreword, illustrated. Illustrations by Charles Hargens. A chronicle of the rise and fall of the Plummer gang of outlaws in and about Virginia City, Montana in the early 1860's. On page 340 there is a picture of the "Hangman's Tree," which claimed the lives of 13 outlaws in Helena during Vigilante days. A fine, bright copy. Scarce dust jacket has some very slight wear to spine ends and spine is very lightly sunned. Signed presentation by author on half-title. Seller Inventory # 52460

Front colophon: "Two hundred and fifty copies o this edition have been specially bound and signed by the Author, Hoffman Birney; This is number 125." Original publisher's brown cloth binding with gilt lettering on front cover and spine. Top edge gilt. 5 3/4" x 8 1/4." 346 pages, complete. Many black-and-white plates, complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for age toning and a small blue sticker on back pastedown. Covers are very clean and intact except for slight rubbing, minuscule fading to spine, and some wear to corners and head and tail of spine. Corners show the exposed boards from the wear. A Very Good copy. A historical account of the infamous outlaw, Henry Plummer (1832-1864), and his gang. Plummer led a double life as a member of law enforcement, including sheriff and city marshal, as well as the leader of a criminal gang. Plummer's road agents wreaked havoc on the Alder Gulch and Virginia City region of Montana, committing numerous crimes including robbery and murder. A group of vigilantes, the Vigilance Committee of Alder Gulch, was organized in 1863 to combat Plummer's gang. The Vigilance Committee put an end to Plummer and his gang through vigilante justice.
