47 pp (there are three blank leaves at the front and at the back). This is definitely a contemporary cloth binding, and it looks to me like an original binding. Old paper labels on spine. Ink stamp of "Harvard College Library Duplicate" on verso of title page. Very Good. First Edition in book form. PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed (in an unidentified hand): "With Compliments/ of the Author." The online digitized copy--by HathiTrust, and by Google Books--of the Crerar Library (now University of Chicago) copy has the same inscription. A note on the Harvard University bookplate indicates that this copy was a gift from George Hayward on June 26, 1857. There is also a handwritten note about the gift from Hayward on the verso of the title page. "Neither Laennec nor his followers with the exception of Skoda paid any attention to changes in the pitch of percussion notes or respiratory sounds and credit for this emphasis belongs to Austin Flint. This work appeared in an essay, 'The Variations of Pitch in Percussion and Respiratory Sounds, and Their Application to Physical Diagnosis' [offered here], for which he received the annual prize of the American Medical Association in 1852" (Willius & Dry, History of the Heart and the Circulation, p. 156; see also Willius & Keys, Cardiac Classics, p. 500).
