About this Item
8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Presentation copy, signed and inscribed by author to noted American poet Denise Levertov and her husband, author Mitchell Goodman: 'For Denise & Mitch with both my love & respect Henry.' 'The Vergil Woods' was Braun's first book. Also laid in loose is a nearly-final typed draft (with typed corrections), of Braun's great poem 'The Shed', published in 'Poetry' in late 1969. Braun chose a line from this poem for his tombstone. In this draft, Braun has almost finalized the text, aside from a word choice in the fifth stanza, where he here has 'Though some men have pulled', which he later changed to 'But some.' At the time this book was published, Braun was a neighbor of the Goodman's (Levertov's married name) in Maine (where the latter had a summer home), and was active with them at the beginning of their antiwar activism related to Vietnam. For more information, see the article in the Fall 1968 edition of the 'Michigan Quarterly Review'. Seller Inventory # 005502133
