The first edition, first impression of the first two volumes of the publication of the journals of Benjamin Henry Latrobe, an Anglo-American neoclassical architect who emigrated to the United States, and is referred to by the publisher as the 'father of the American architectural profession'.Signed by the editor Edward C. Carter II to the half title of volume I, with the inscription 'Best regards to Peter Jay, Edward Carter 8th December 1977'.In the publisher's original dust wrappers, price unclipped.Illustrated throughout with facsimile plates of the leaves of the original manuscripts, and colour examples of Latrobe's sketches and watercolours.With volume I covering Latrobe's life from 1795-1797, and volume II from 1797-1798. A third volume, covering the years 1799-1820, was later published. In the publisher's original cloth bindings, with price unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, fine. A touch of sunning to dust wrapper back strips, with chipping to back strip heads, and a touch of edge wear to head of front wrap, and the odd closed tear to wrap perimeters.
