First edition. Fine in very near fine dust jacket with a tiny nick near the base of the spine and a faint spot on the spine, but an especially bright and fine example. Signed by the author and dated in 1976. Cheever's uncommon first book, a collection of short fiction that he never allowed to be reprinted. Only three of the stories have ever been subsequently printed, in an obscure paperback published in the 1960s. Consequently Cheever was loathe to sign copies, and this is one of only a very few. Combined with the especially nice condition, this may be the best copy we've seen. Seller Inventory # 318499

Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 256 pages; 1943 Random House. HC 1st edition. Bound in original red cloth with decorative title desing to spine in blue. This copy was held for on base reading by Untied States Special Services, "Base Section 1" with ink ownership stamp to the rear endpage. Front free endpage removed; the half-title page is the first page. Some shallow damp exposure blanching to the cloth along the front joint and to the front edges of the boards. Binding is sound and the contents generally clean with no damp evidence to page stock. Cheever's first book, with stories collected from prior appearances in the New Yorker, Yale Review, Harper's Magazine and others. Uncommon and anecdotally moreso due to Cheever's own efforts at destroying any copies he encountered. Never republished. This copy Good only with faults but sound and decent as a filler copy.
