1963. First edition. 64pp. Michael Peter Leopold Hamburger (1924-2007) was a noted German-British translator, poet, critic, memoirist and academic. He was known in particular for his translations and his work in literary criticism. The publisher Paul Hamlyn was his younger brother. Weather & season is his fourth collection of poetry, and is important for developments both of style and theme. The book is bound in the original blue boards with silver titling on the spine. The book is in excellent condition and the contents are tight and clean with a photograph of the author at a poetry reading tipped-in on the half-title page. The half-title has been inscribed and flat signed by the author thus: "For David Burnett - Michael Hamburger, Durham 19/5/78". There is a small name label ofEdinburgh/Durham poet David Burnett on the front fixed endpaper. The dustrapper is also very good with some shelf wear and light soiling and light bumping to the spine ends. The front flap has not been clipped but a small handwritten price sticker showing £2 has been placed over the original printed price of 8s.
