INSCRIBED by the author on the front endpaper: "To Sesaly Gould, named after a no doubt charming ancestor of the 15th century, this book of poems, now out of print, because she liked "War Songs" / from her friend / Struthers Burt / The Sandhills / North Carolina / Jan 10 / 43." Sesaly Gould was the son of Bruce and Beatrice Gould. His parents were born in Luana and Emmetsburg, Iowa, respectively, both attending the University of Iowa and marrying shortly thereafter, in 1923. Although the couple both harbored aspirations of working in the theatre even co-writing two plays in 1929 and 1934 they found more success as journalists, working variously at "The Sun," "The New York Post," and the "Wall Street News" throughout the 1920s. The Goulds shifted into magazine writing in 1931, and in 1935 took over as co-editors of the "Ladies' Home Journal," in the midst of the Great Depression. Through their guidance, the magazine became the top-selling women's magazine in the country for nearly 30 years, largely due to their efforts to modernize the journal and broaden its subject matter for the emancipated woman. The pair co-wrote an autobiography, "American Story: Memories and Reflections of Bruce Gould and Beatrice Blackmar Gould," published by Harper and Row in 1968. Baltimore-born writer and Princeton graduate Maxwell Struthers Burt published numerous works of fiction and nonfiction throughout the early to mid-20th century, including five novels, eight volumes of nonfiction, and seven collections of poetry and short stories. Very Good plus, with no dust jacket, corners slightly bumped, lightly faded at the spine and board extremities.
