A cleverly conceived plot leads us down a slippery slope as we rush to the conclusion of Pamela Mitchell's, Wired to Death. Taut, clear writing succeeds in catching our attention and keeping it. A solid effort on the part of Mitchell results in an enjoyable mystery that should appeal widely to mystery and general fiction readers alike. Set in 2018, Mitchell creates realism by maintaining familiarity along with her technologically pumped up world that is full of imperfections and frustrations. CDC Field Agent, Tanner Bishop, is flawed, amiable, and all too human as she butts heads with authority figures, pouts over an ex-husband, runs roughshod over her subordinates and ponders an inadvisable entanglement with her co-worker. Usually able to isolate a pathogen and synthesize a cure before any fatalities, Tanner's work takes on an unexpected urgency when a particularly deadly form of cancer is found. She scrambles to find the connection between the cancer and a virtual reality weight loss program before it becomes available nationally and before it takes the life of her best friend.
