INSCRIBED FIRST EDITION in brown leatherette with gilt titling, photographic dust jacket, inscribed by author Margot Liberty on title page, forward by Richard Slatta, frontis. of Holmes on horseback, illustrations (listed), 261pp. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket (in mylar protection). Delivered by a horse-and-buggy doctor in a 1911 blizzard near Hulett, Wyoming, Holmes spent nearly his whole life on horseback herding cattle and the other ranch jobs required by a working cowboy.

In Working Cowboy, Margot Liberty and Barry Head present the oral history of Ray Holmes, a Wyoming cowboy born in 1911. Holmes has spent his life on horseback, herding cattle and doing other work with livestock. Since the time he rode his first horse, Holmes wanted nothing more than to be a cowboy--though his father insisted he would never make a living at it. The determination that started him on his dream has stayed with him throughout his life. Holmes remains a quiet man, averse to bragging but is candid and strongly opinionated.
Practical chapters, such as “Some Talk about Cowboysâ and “Some Talk about Calves and Calving,â alternate with chapters describing Holmesâ s colorful life, including his coping with the blizzard of 1959, listening to the very first radio in the neighborhood, and sleeping with potatoes to keep them from freezing.

This is an account of cowboy life as it was actually lived. The coauthors present the oral history of Ray Holmes, a retired cowboy living in Sheridan, Wyoming, who was featured in an award-winning PBS documentary. Born in 1911, Holmes devoted virtually his entire life to herding cattle and working livestock. His unpretentious narrative lacks the bragging customarily associated with this type of book, but it does provide a vivid and interesting image of the cowboy lifestyle. Chapters alternate between descriptions of Holmes' life and practical descriptions of cowboy and ranch work. From bunkhouse pranks to listening to early radio to freezing through blizzards to just plain coping--all the commentary displays Holmes' humor, opinions, honesty, and, above all, self-reliance. Photos from the Holmes family album are included with those by Margot Liberty. The book is a worthwhile and enlightening contribution to the continuing saga of the American cowboy. Fred Egloff
