Warmly inscribed on front endpaper: "To Liz [Dauber] / with blessings & high hopes that we will both see many many more such celebrations as this one, anyway that you will," signed Bernarda, undated but apparently contemporary with publication. Octavo (27cm). Beige, coarse-weave cloth; dustjacket; [56]pp; illus. Tight, clean and unmarked, but slightly musty from long storage; Very Good. In the original dustwrapper, price-clipped on front flap, slightly toned and soiled, Very Good. A great association copy of this whimsical bestiary, both illustrated and written by Bryson, who was the wife of American painter Ben Shahn. The inscription is to Liz Dauber, herself a well-known illustrator and book-designer and wife of American social-realist painter and printmaker Gregorio Prestopino. The Shahns and Prestopinos, besides being closely aligned socially and artistically, were neighbors in the small left-wing settlement of Roosevelt, New Jersey, founded as a WPA Resettlement Administration project in 1938.
