Item description from seller

211 pages, illustrated. "Why were the forests cut flat? And cut again, and again, creating a local energy crisis so acute that eventually wood had to be imported from Vermont and the Catskills. The answer: a rapacious demand for wood to make charcoal- charcoal to fuel stone-towered blast furnaces. This corner of Connecticut was one of America's areas for making and forge iron for nearly 200 years- from 1734 to 1923. During the War of Independence its blast furnaces and large and small forges produced so much iron and so many armaments that it became locally known as "The Arsenal of the Revolution"." FINE HARDCOVER, FINE DUST JACKET, signed by J. L. Poole. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
