Binding A, beach scene of birds, sea and two wooden piles printed in black to blue-green cloth, spine titled in gilt. Cloth stained, name to end-paper, slightly cocked. Good-plus. Denham Jordan wrote numerous books and articles under the pseudonym, "A Son of the Marshes". He was a house-painter by profession, was born in Milton Regis (Milton-next-Sittingbourne) in Kent and moved to Dorking when he was a teenager, living there for the rest of his life. The places mentioned in his books are always disguised, Longshore Drift (1898) was his only book where he used real place-names, and that by public demand. Two editions of this book were issued in 1882. They had different covers and although superficially similar in layout, the type for each was set separately. This version, "Binding A", has green boards showing a beach scene with a pair of wooden piles with birds at their feet, the sea in the background and seagulls in the air. This and the titles are printed in black. This version contains eight illustrations in green monochrome, signed "DJ1888" (Denham Jordan). The other version, "Binding B", has grey-green cloth with identical titles, but printed in maroon, with a stylised compass rose placed centrally. The "Binding B" version does not have the monochrome plates. In addition, "Binding A" has x,262 pages whilst "Binding B" has viii,290 pages plus a 24-page publisher's catalogue to the rear. .
