Broadside printed on two unnumbered leaves, 13 x 7 7/8 inches, signed in type at the end "Levin Wales [sic] / Secretary, Board of Trustees." A prospectus for the reorganization of the college which had opened in 1811, the address begins: "The Trustees of Jefferson College at Washington, Mississippi, have the satisfaction to announce to the public that the institution is now prepared for the reception of students." The curriculum and faculty are described in detail, along with the "moral and religious" advantages of the college. Wailes argues against "sending your sons to other states where they are released from social bonds" and makes reference to sectional strife, "a formidable contest has commenced between the North and the South � it surely becomes us to preserve our children from any influence that might mislead their judgment or weaken their patriotism. To do this effectually WE MUST KEEP THEM AT HOME!" Two thirds of the final column are devoted to a recitation of facts about the college, listing faculty members and their specialties, fees and terms for tuition and board, various rules and activities, etc. The school closed in 1964 and is now a state historic site.
