About this Item
. Signed by Ilustrator Slip-Case - Hard Cover. Tobias Smollett was baptised on March 19th 1721. He was one of the great English satirists and writers. He apprenticed as a surgeon and throughout his life he combined the roles of medical man and author. He is best known for his picaresque novels and led a fascinating life. This very attractive two volume set is titled 'The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle, in which is included Memoirs of a Lady of Quality'. The illustrations are by the great George Cruikshank who illustrated so many of the Charles Dickens novels. The books are bound in fine half-leather over marbled boards, The endpapers are marbled as well. All of the edges are marbled and they look beautiful! The spines are lettered in gilt and read 'British Novelists - Adventures of Peregrine Pickle Vol I and II'. The bindings are in very fine condition with hardly a hint of shelf-wear. The books are 12mo in size. Each illustrated plate in the books has a tissue guard. There is very, very little foxing in the volumes and it tends to be, as usual, on the plates. The textblocks are almost pristine. There is a slight bump to the top back board of volume one but it is almost invisible. 'Peregrine Pickle' is a picaresque romance whose action takes place in the early eighteenth century in England and the Continent. A really attractive set. We are pleased to send pictures on request.
