Jacobs and the entire book produced under his supervision at The Van Rees Press New York". 6 5/8 inches x 9 7/8 in., numbered and signed limitation page; half-title; frontispiece portrait of Wilder, reproducing a Doris Ulmann photograph in black and white, with tissue guard; title-page printed in black and blue with borders and device; and inscribed at the top, in ink, by Thornton Wilder: M. H. [Munson Havens] from T. W. Foreword by Thornton Wilder; 149 pp. + colophon page. Dark blue paper over boards, with the titling in silver on the spine, blue and white, Coward-McCann candlestick design endpapers. The spine shows light fading, tanning to book edges; scattered tan spotting to the title-page, prelims. and some pages, upper cover corners show small bumps. This copy was inscribed for Cleveland, Ohio based book collector and author, Munson Havens (1873-1942), and bears his double silhouette bookplate (Munson Havens & Hetty Ganson Havens), on the front decorated paste-down endpaper. Munson Havens has inserted a signed letter from Thornton Wilder, partly regarding book signings; this is on a folded, 5 3/4 in. x 7 3/4 in. sheet of gray Whiting's Polo Cloth note paper: "Dear Mr. Havens--I've discovered that between the dreadful Press--the dept stores and their signings--which I suppose I must do to help the management build up its house for Tonight--that THEY have built up a full field day for me this p.m. and I'd better go through with it. So I have to ask you to release me from our good tranquil hour this afternoon, and look forward to seeing you after the Lecture. But lookit, when do we get an unencumbered talk on books per se; writing as writing, I mean, not items? However I shall be back some day in Town not as a pro. talker. And it can happen then. Ever [signed]: Thornton Wilder Tues. a.m. [added in pencil: Cleveland-April 2 1929]. The letter shows a central horizontal fold from being folded for mailing, some light, age-related tanning. Sold together only, the copy of the limited, signed book, with inscribed initials, and the letter that refers to book signings.
