Small single piece of paper. 10 x 4 cm. Date and recipient unknown. Nell was free born in Boston. He was a journalist, begining as an apprentice on Garrison's The Liberator as a teenager. He moved to Rochester for four years (1847-1851) while working on Frederick Douglass's The North Star. Nell resumed contributing to The Liberator after he returned to Boston and continued to so until the paper ceased publication in 1865. He was heavily involved in efforts to secure integrated public education for African Americans. Nell was also heavily involved in the Underground Railroad. He joined the Boston Vigilance Committee after passage of the Fugitive Slave Act in 1850 and is believed to have sheltered some fugitives in his Boston home. He wrote The "Colored Patriots of the American Revolution, with Sketches of Several Distinguished Colored Persons: To Which is added a Brief Survey of the Condition and Prospects of Colored Americans" which was published in Boston by Robert F. Wallcut in 1855.
