About this Item
("George"), London, Monday May 29, 1972, 7:15 am on Grosvenor House, Park Lane letterhead to his close friend Alex Tiers in Santa Barbara. 4 pages. 8 1/4" x 5 7/8". Together with hand addressed envelope, stamped and postmarked London, 29 May, 1972, with Cukor's signature on back. Very good. Cukor writes from London during the filming of "Travels With My Aunt" commenting on the filming progress, his attraction to Alec McCowen, Magie Smith, Mary Baker Eddy and the fact he is still gay. In all a remarkable frank and unguarded letter to a good friend. Handwritten letters by Cukor are uncommon, as he had most of his letters typed. He was also usually much more guarded about his homosexuality. Cukor (1899-1983), born George Dewey Cukor, July 7, 1899, New York City, died January 23, 1983, Los Angeles, California; American film and stage director; original director of "Gone With the Wind"; winner of the Best Director Academy Award in 1964 for "My Fair Lady"; film career 1930-1981: "Little Women" 1933; "David Copperfield" 1934; "Camille" 1937; "A Star Is Born" 1954.
