Add to basketHandwritten letter dated December 14, 1896, from New York City. 1 page, 11 x 8 1/2 inches, folded in half and written on one side. Fold lines, it appears paper was torn incompletely from a pad, does not affect writing. Stephen C. Massett (1820-1898) was an English-born actor, singer and songwriter. He is credited with giving the first theatrical performance ever in San Francisco in 1849, singing his songs and portraying Shakespearean characters. He also tried publishing, serving as editor of the Marysville Herald and printing the first Dame Shirley letters. In this letter to William Winter (1836-1917), prominent drama critic and author, he thanks Mr. Winter for an article and a poem he wrote in the New York Tribune, saying "they are both gems". Also included is Mr. Massett's calling card with his New York address handwritten, "Savage Club, London" printed.
