This Maine-born Congregationalist minister made his mark in Iowa, where he spearheaded educational reform and became the first president of Grinnell College (then Iowa College) from 1865 to 1885. Intriguing if frustratingly cryptic closing portion of an ALS -- as is a fragmentary ANS, 1p, irregular 5¼" X 1 3/4" (tipped to slightly larger sheet), n.p., n.y. ["1855" penned minutely in another hand along right border]. Very good. Bold and attractive, the top two lines are partial -- whole reads: "ing it & robbing us / it will be a favor to the [illegible] / Yours truly Geo. F. Magoun. / Mr Quinche comes from Columbian College D.C.".
