A substantial autograph manuscript of a short story by the master of the short story. The first page of the manuscript is titled and signed, and includes the two epigraphs that appear in the print version of the story, while the second page unnumbered, but marked in pencil as "Dup" is also signed, seemingly titled "Nashville," and contains the first lines of the story. Written in response to the Frank Norris quote, used as one of the epigraphs: "Fancy a novel about Chicago or Buffalo, let us say, or Nashville, Tennessee! There are just three big cities in the United States that are "story cities" New York, of course, New Orleans, and, best of the lot, San Francisco," the story follows an unnamed narrator who visits Nashville to meet with a potential contributor to his literary magazine, only to become wrapped up in the intergenerational drama of three Southern Gothic characters.
