Item description from seller

2 pages, 7.75 x 6 inches, Brooklyn, April 26, 1900. In this letter, Markham tells Princess Salm Salm that he would be happy to send a poem to be included in her souvenir program and asks which kind of theme would be preferable. In full: "I shall be glad to send you a poem for use in your Souvenir Program. It was not possible to send it in time for tonight. Please let me know the latest date on which the manuscript should be in your hands. If something comes to me on the war, I shall (be) most happy to send it. If not, I will send you a poem in the spirit of your undertaking, the spirit of freedom and good will. Or, are you particular as to the theme of the verses? The fact that I contribute at all will indicate my sympathy with your work. Please send me a line." Signed in full. Also included is an attractive copy of Markham's poem "The Man with the Hoe." Horizontal fold; very good(+) condition.
