1 page (front and back), 8.25 x 7.75 inches (torn from larger sheet), Richmond, Virginia, letter dated March 27, 1862. This note is signed by the Confederate Brigadier General who commanded prisoner-of-war camps throughout the South during the war. Signature is on the back of an appeal letter by a captain hoping to clear a soldier accused of disloyalty. Va. Vols. and behaved himself very bravely in the engagements with the Enemy on July 8th & 21st 1861 and I have every reason to believe him to be a true southern man." Winder's note on the back says, "What is Emmenhauser arrested for Jon H. Winder B.G." Uneven edge on the bottom of the letter; browning along natural folds. Very good(-) condition.
