First published in 1943, this is the story of an impoverished transient family, pursuing one busted dream after another in the American West, headed by a violent and feckless man that resembles the author's own father. Stegner's fifth novel, and his first critical and popular success. Illustrated by Charles Reid. Thick octavo. Full brown leather binding, with decorative gilt stamping, four raised bands, moire silk endpapers, and a ribbon marker. Tiny bit of rubbing to the top corners; else a fine copy. Colberg A7.7.

Established in 1981, johnson rare books & archives is located at The Book Shop in downtown Covina, about 20 miles east of Los Angeles. The shop is open six days a week and houses an inventory of some 30,000 titles, ranging from the general second-hand to the truly antiquarian.
