First Illustrated Edition. Quarto, 8.5 x 12 inches. Elegantly bound by the Club Bindery, 1901, signed in gilt pallet front dentelle, in full crimson red levant morocco, and finished by the Club s best finisher who was brought over from France by Robert Hoe, in 1897. Signed also, "LEON MAILLARD FINISHER" in the dentelle. Large frames of scrolling fleurons and inlaid flowers in gold decorate this sumptuous binding. The Grolier Club catalogue included with the volume notes the tooling is done "en champ", which literally translates to "in the field", e.g., tooling done without borders, panels, or compartments enclosing it. Five bands to spine, with title and author to second compartment, and remaining compartments tooled in a similar style to the covers, with gilt fleurons and small inlaid gold flowers. Heavily gilt-rolled dentelles, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Small leather book label of Robert Hoe to the front pastedown, lot #2812 in the sale of his library. One of 20 copies on Japan paper (#42) with the illustrations in three states. Illustrated by several artists, each illustrating one act; the cover and portrait are by Francois Thevenot, the first act by Adrien Moreau, the second act by Charles Leandre, the third act by Albert Laurens, the fourth act by Francois Flameng and the final act by Albert Besnard. All illustrations were then woodcut by Romagnol. Corners bumped, some old color match repairs to bottom edges, and very slight bottom indent. Original morocco and marbled paper chemise (rubbing and edgewear) included. This volume was featured in two exhibitions at the Grolier Club: "Mosaic Bookbindings" in 1902 (#231) and "An Exhibition of Some of the Latest Artistic Bindings Done at the Club Bindery" in 1906 (#116). Both catalogues are included (worn, with 1902 catalogue missing rear cover). Seller Inventory # 6890
