The Book of Psalms: The New Translation and Commentary

By adding moral and spiritual messages to scholarly interpretations of the Book of Psalms, the authors provide spiritual solace, inspiration, comfort, and healing to the modern reader. This important new translation of the Book of Psalms preserves its original poetic expression and psalmic imagery.

This season has been notable for distinguished translations, especially from ancient Hebrew. Foremost among these is the immense new version of the Book of Psalms. In an act of great courage, Rabbis Rozenberg (formerly of Hebrew Union Coll.) and Zlotowitz (a senior scholar at the Union of American Hebrew Congregations) have undertaken a wholly new and convincingly Jewish translation of the Psalms, already familiar to English-language speakers through the Authorized Version. As translators, they succeed wonderfully, giving these poems the authority of antiquity as well as a modern clarity. ("You sweep them away like a flood, they sink into deep sleep,/ In the morning they are like grass sprouting new.") The notes are thorough and intelligent. Highly recommended.
