Hardcover with DJ. Black cloth with gold decoration and lettering. Cloth is faded to a dull black, and binding a bit shaken, though with noteworthy damage, except partial split at front gutter, where backing linen is visible. Original DJ with a couple small chips and splits, not in mylar. Scarce. No date on title page. Copyright page dated 1929. This is the second printing, also in May. 369 pages. Map endpapers. Pages toned from age, but text block tight and complete. This copy with inscription on the half title, To Emma Speed Sampson, who can tell stories that delight one editor I know, even up to and including the fourth reading. Best wishes, Clarke. May 1929. Sampson was the prolific author of the Miss Minerva stories, as well as a host of other titles written under her own name and several pseudonyms. Sampson and Venable were members of that peculiar class of southerners who wrote fond recollections of the pre-war years, nearly all sidelined as racist or misguided these days, but popular in their day. Regular shipping by USPS Media Mail is $4. MEDIA MAIL SHIPPING DOES NOT INCLUDE TRACKING.
