Second and First Editions, respectively. 282; 264 pp. 2 vols. 8vo. Each volume is inscribed in pencil "Joseph Tuckerman/ from G.H. Calvert/ Christmas week/ 1886." George Henry Calvert (1803-1889), was an essayist, poet, and pioneer in the study of German literature. Among other achievements, his writings on phrenology and the water cure were the first on these subjects to be published in America. Tuckerman was son of Edward Tuckerman and the father of American social work. Uniformly bound in full tan contemporary polished calf, spines with some rubbing. Bookplate of Joseph Tuckerman in each.
