He tells the story of his one-of-a-kind career in this entertaining autobiography. Patkin didn't start out to be a clown; he was a minor-league pitcher before World War II and started clowning around in lopsided games while in the service. His antics caught the eye of Bill Veeck, who booked him as a comic coach to boost the attendance of the Cleveland Indians. When the Indians became a good club and didn't need a comic, Veeck got Patkin started around the minor leagues. Patkin's loosey-goosey, rubber-faced slapstick has been a baseball tradition ever since--and was featured in the film Bull Durham. Patkin expresses a little bitterness and a few regrets over his lifetime in the bush leagues, but overall, this is an upbeat account of one of baseball's enduring characters. Wes Lukowsky
