Although she spent six school years at a convent boarding school in Cambridge, the author lived in Cairo until the age of 22. They were turbulent always interesting, often happy, but touched by tragedy.

The daughter of a journalist, Paula Ormerod worked with her father on his weekly magazine and also on publications at the Ministry of Information (Middle East) during the Second World War. Later she studied at the London School of Economics and qualified as a medical social worker. She married, has two sons and lives in London.
