Limited Edition. 3 pp. Folio (41 X 31 cm.) Original cloth backed paper covered boards. Printed label on front board. Three text leaves including title page, Contents leaf and limitation leaf. 20 prints all loose in the portfolio along with the text leaves. Minor soiling otherwise in fantastic condition. Rare, Group of Seven portfolio containing original prints by Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Arthur Lismer, J.E.H. MacDonald and F.H. Varley. The limitation of the portfolio is 100 copies this being 71. All of the images are black and white with the image size being about 17 X 14 cm. 19/20 of the images are signed in the bottom right hand corner by the artist, in pencil. Each artist has four different images with one of the images by Varley not signed. It seems that Varley must have missed signing the one print as the two examples of the portfolio I have seen, both are missing the same signature. All of the prints have been professionally matted with conservation mat board. Five of the prints are framed in special frames designed to change the print thus having the ability to change your exhibit at will. In addition to the artist's signatures, the portfolio has been inscribed by Arthur Lismer to Elizabeth Styring Nutt (1870-1946). Elizabeth Styring Nutt was born on the Isle of Man in 1870, but moved to Sheffield, England, following the death of her father. She studied at the Sheffield School of Art between 1897 and 1900, with fellow students (and Sheffield natives) Arthur Lismer and Frederick H. Varley. She also studied at the Newlyn School (Cornwall) with Stanhope Forbes, and later at the Sorbonne and in Florence. The portfolio's are very rare in the market place with only one example being recorded at an art auction and no examples in book auctions. It would seem that many of the portfolios were broken and the prints sold separately. Each of the prints are reproduced in the introduction of David Silcox's book on the Group of Seven and are described on page 37. The original price of the portfolio being $12.00.
