Originally published with the title "On the Treatment of Fractures of the Lower Jaw. A New Operative Method", The Lancet, 1867, 1, p. 79, and then published separately in 1869, with the title above. The 1869 edition is only 15 pp, with 2 plates. "In the period which has elapsed since the first publication of my pamphlet [in 1869] I have operated upon an average of six cases annually, and am more than ever convinced that the method in question is a decided improvement upon all prior modes of treatment" (Preface to the Second Edition, p. 5). Hugh Owen Thomas's first publication. Keith misdates this to 1873 (Menders of the Maimed, p. 43). "An ingenious method of daily tightening the wire so as to maintain perfect co[ad]aptation of the fragments . . . [it] gave the first hint of his devotion to the principle of enforced, uninterrupted and prolonged rest" (Le Vay, Hugh Owen Thomas, p. 60).
