About this Item
Single stiff card sheet, folded, 200 x 253mm, engraved with a gold crown. Some foxing of the exterior. Inscribed by the sender, "from Elizabeth R". Mounted inside the card is a black-and-white portrait, 152 x 183mm, of a cheerful Queen Mother posing beside a horse (her horse?, attended by a groom figure of whom only the back of his cap is visible) - labelled "1st". The unnamed recipient of the card was Queen Elizabeth's old friend Lord David Cecil. As a boy, his Oxford friend A.L. Rowse recorded in Friends and Contemporaries (1989), Cecil "fancied himself in love with a neighbour, a charming girl from St Paul's Walden who was often at Hatfield, and became Queen as wife of George VI. They remained friends all through their long lives." Or, as Cecil's daughter Laura Hornak put it, "He used to play with Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, later Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. He was six and she was slightly older. He said she was his first love.". Seller Inventory # 31M100098
