About this Item
Shepard, E.H. First editions, all limited issue, each numbered and signed by Milne and Shepard, one with additional autograph presentation. Illustrated by E. H. Shepard. 4 vols. In uniform square 8vo format. A complete set of Milne s beloved classics in their finest and rarest large-paper state, each printed on handmade stock and numbered and signed by both Milne and Shephard, with each retaining their original dust jackets. The first of the series, When We Were Very Young, is the scarcest, being limited to only 100 copies, and especially so in dust jacket; this copy is no. 11. The second book, Winnie-the-Pooh, published in 1926, is no. 287 of 350 copies, and the third, Now We Are Six, is no. 1 of 200 copies. The final book, The House at Pooh Corner, is an unnumbered presentation copy from an issue of 350 copies, inscribed on the colophon as being for W. F. Forrester, Esq.; it also differentiates from the previous titles by the added importance given on the dust jacket to Shepard's artistic contributions, which are accorded equal weight to Milne's. Little appears to be known about W. F. Forrester, but a number of other inscribed publications and artwork by prominent authors and artists of the era have appeared previously at auction. Very rare as a complete collection, and particularly so in the original dust jackets. All in original buckram-backed paper boards with printed labels affixed to front; all in original dust jackets; sunning to spines and edges of first three books, with a few minor chips and bumps, primarily to head of spine; small sticker to spine of first book; last with some light edge wear and bumped corners; minor overall shelf soiling to all; enclosed together in a brown cloth slipcase Illustrated by E. H. Shepard. 4 vols. In uniform square 8vo format First editions, all limited issue, each numbered and signed by Milne and Shepard, one with additional autograph presentation.
