About this Item
Signed by Earhart at dedication. 137pp. 166 colors, hues, tints and shades produced by a mixture of two colors each. 4to. A copiously illustrated printer's guide on the proper use and mixing of colors on press for maximum visual effect. John F. Earhart, a partner in the prominent Cincinnati printing firm of Earhart & Richardson, notes in the preface that he felt "a work of this character has long been needed," and that he was offering it as "a practical guide to all printers who desire to obtain the most artistic results in ornamental Color Printing, by the least amount of labor and expense." Among the topics covered are primary and secondary colors, tints, gradations, overprinting, patterns, combinations, specialty processes (such as foil), and typography, among others, with multiple examples ranging from business cards, advertisements, and printers' ornaments to menus, programs, and maps fully demonstrating the concepts discussed in the text. Several full-page samples are bound in, as well as color charts and specimen tables. Fascinating as both a historical treastise on traditional press work and as a catalog of vintage 19th-century graphic design.
