Hardcover in original leather binding. Virtually all of the leather spine cover is lacking (see pics) and front board is literally attached by a thread. This book was owned by Dr. Benjamin Alexander Cheek, and was signed on the front endpaper by him, dated October 14th, 1855 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where he was then a student at the university. Cheek would later go on to become a medical doctor and surgeon, serving the Confederate Army in the Civil War in the 22nd NC Infantry. His full service record is highlighted below. Burke Haywood, to organize a Medical Staff for a Camp of Instruction, near Raleigh, NC, and was paid $130/mo. 07/19/1861 - Entered North Carolina State service as Asst. Surgeon from Warren Co., NC 08/07/1861 - Entered Confederate Army service as an Asst. Surgeon 11/19/1861 - Appointed Asst. Surgeon, Provisional Army of the Confederate States 11/30/1861 - Asst. Surgeon, 22nd NC Infantry, Evansport, VA 01/31/1862 - Asst. Surgeon, 22nd NC Infantry, Evansport, VA 03/31/1862 - Asst. Surgeon, 22nd NC Infantry, camp near Fredericksburg, VA 07/27/1862 - "I certify I have carefully examined Dr. B. A. Cheek, Assist Surgeon, 22nd R.N.C. Troops and find that he is suffering from an affection of the right lung which is tuberculus [sic - tuberculous] in its nature and of some two years standing. His general health recently has been very bad, having just recovered from a severe and protracted illness. He has been troubled with cough and frequent haemorrhages for some time past. As the only security to his future usefullness [sic- usefulness] I would respectfully aise that he be released from his present duties. Richmond, July 27, 1862, Jas K Hall, Surg. 2nd R. N. C. T." Gray, 22nd North Carolina Troops, from a camp near ichmond, VA, "Col., Permit me to tender this my resignation as Assist Surgeon of the 22nd Regt. N. C. Troops. In doing so I assure you I very much regret to sever the association with the Regt., which has been as pleasing as possible, which as a matter of course, places the Medical Staff where the suffering of the command are. The condition of my health is such at present to allow me of no alternative but to retire from the Service or sacrifice my life. If I should remain I would not be able to discharge my duties to the Government or our brave men. I am, Very Respectfully, Your Obt Servant, B. A. Cheek, Assist Surg, 22nd Regt. N.C.
