Vancouver, British Columbia. The Phoenix Press. 1992. Limited edition. Book number 1 of 15 copies published. Octavo (9 x 6). 80 pp. including the colophon. The book is signed by Al Purdy and Alex Widen on the limitation page. Without explanation this copy number 1 does not have Jim Rimmer's colored illustration of cougar tipped-in on the title page. Black and white photos, with a full-page text diagram drawn by Haig-Brown. The bulk of the book with interesting and revealing exchanges of correspondence between Al Purdy and Roderick Haig-Brown, dating from 1974 through 1976, with Purdy's "The Death of a Friend" an especially memorable tribute to the life and spirit of Roderick Haig-Brown. The book's title "Cougar Hunter" was taken from Purdy's same titled essay in the final chapter, and it's a beautiful, striking, thoughtful biography of Roderick Haig-Brown. Al Purdy and Alex Widen formed a partnership in 1992 to publish Cougar Hunter under the banner of The Phoenix Press; Al the writer and poet, Alex the printer. The book is bound in brown morocco leather spine and brown cloth boards, with gilt titles on the spine and front cover. A fine, beautiful book.
