About this Item

White cloth lettered in gilt, the spine lettered in gilt on a black leather label. Frontispiece portrait of Drake, illustrations and vignettes by Edmund Garrett. A little dust-soiling of boards, generally a clean and attractive copy. This is copy #3 of an edition of 100, being one of only five copies printed on Japanese Vellum Paper. This copy has an original painting by Garrett on the recto of the limitation leaf, titled "Steeple Bush and Grasses", signed with the artist's monogrammed initials and the date "95". Laid in is a photocopy of a letter from Garrett dated 1895, to a Mr. Semperly, saying in part: "Send your copy too and I will do it as gladly as I shall for Gobeille". [Gobeille owned this copy]. A very light pencil sketch on the front end paper suggests that Garrett had intended to paint there, but instead chose the following leaf. Enclosed in a folding blue leather & marbled slipcase, some wear to the extremities, titled on the front " The Culprit Fay. Second Publication Of The Rowfant Club". A unique copy.
