[Bucharest, 1924]. Postcard measuring 13.9 ? 8.9 cm, with an original silver gelatin print of a painting by Janco to recto, signed and titled ("Souvenir"). With extensive manuscript text addressed to Teige to recto and verso of the card. Sent, with address of Karel Teige in Prague, postal stamps and rubber stamp dated Bucarest, February 1924. Light overall wear; still very good. An important artefact, documenting an early link between two major centers of the East European avant-gardes. Signed by both Marcel Janco and Ion Vinea, the postcard is addressed to Karel Teige, the central figure and theoretician of the Czech avant-garde: "We eagerly await your article in French on the Czechoslovak avant-garde movement with translations and photos. I myself will soon send you a few words on the non-existence of modernism in our architecture." He further mentions submissions of texts to the journals "Disk" (Disc) and "Stavba" (Construction), and offers to submit an essay on the avant-garde movement in Romania, including mention of its leading journal at the time, Contimporanul. Along with Tzara, Janco Marcel Janco (1895?1984) ranks as one of the main initiators of Dada, first at the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich and then in Paris. After returning to Romania in 1922, he was a central figure for various avant-garde journals, including not only Contimporanul, but also Punct. An exhibition organized by Contimporanul in 1924 would become a seminal moment for Romanian avant-garde and cemented the journal's new role as a major organ of the international artistic avant-garde. Organized by M. H. Maxy, Marcel Janco, and Ion Vinea, it opened in November 1924 and included, among many others, works by Karel Teige, suggesting that the present postcard was only the beginning of a longer, more fruitful exchange.
