Signed by the author, and dated 1.7.2025 on the front free endpaper. The contents include the story of the Shap 'granite' quarries and the isolated quarries of Wrengill and Mosedale, the coming of the railway navvies and their unfortunate effects on the population of Shap, Manchester's effect of Thirlmere and Haweswater to provide water for the citizens of the city, the latter resulting in the drowning of the village of Mardale. Appleby is a town well worth a visit, the coffee pot is always on though refreshment with �a little more authority' can be had if the Crown & Cushion in the town's market square is open!
