SAMUEL HUNTINGTON (1731-1796). Samuel Huntington signed the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. He also served as President of the Continental Congress from 1779 to 1781 and chief justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court from 1784 to 1785. He was the governor of Connecticut from 1786 and the first United States governor to have died while in office.ALS. 1pg. November 3, 1788. Norwich, Connecticut. An autograph letter signed Saml. Huntington trying to obtain copies of Connecticuts laws. He wrote to an unnamed correspondent: Sir I am in want of Thirteen sets or Copies of all the Statutes of this State which have been made & passed since the adjourn'd Assembly in 1784 January Session that is since the laws were revised. Those late Statutes are wanted for the use of the United States agreeably to an act of Congress. I wish to be Inform'd as soon as may be whether you have them in print, not bound & can supply me with Thirteen sets of them. I am Sir your humble s Saml. Huntington. During this time, Samuel Huntington was serving as the Governor of Connecticut. Written in late 1788, this letter comes during the transitional period between the Articles of Confederation and the implementation of the new Constitution. Congress required copies of state laws to build a comprehensive legal repository for the nations new government and to ensure legal uniformity across the thirteen states. Huntington is requesting thirteen printed, unbound sets of all Connecticut state statutes passed since the legislative revision of January 1784 for this comprehensive legal repository.
