About this Item
Signed & Inscribed Original Photo by Ernest Hemingway to front of photograph: "Congratulations and best wishes, Ernest Hemingway (56)". Additional inscription below this; likely by one of the Cumbancheros who performed at celebration in honor of the Nobel Prize winning author for 'The Old Man and The Sea'. Hemingway resided at Finca Vigia or "Lookout Farm", his estate in Cuba which is now a museum, from 1939-1960. An original photograph from Cuban journalist Fernando G. Campoamor's library with his personal stamp at back: "BIBLIOTECA DE FERNANDO G. CAMPOAMOR. Presented n fine wood frame. Translation from description at back of photo, apparently from Fernando Campoamor: "Surrounded by friends at a reception presented (offered) by Barcardi for the Nobel Prize medal offered to "la Virgin de la Caridad del Cobre". Original Spanish appears as: "Rodeado amigos recepcion ofrecida por Bacardi por entrega Medalla Premio Nobel (paro) la Caridad del Cobre." Our Lady of Charity also known as Our Lady of El Cobre or Nuestra Senora de la Caridad del Cobre or "la Virgen de la Caridad" is a popular Marian title of the Blessed Virgin Mary known in many Spanish countries referring to an island with mineral reserves of copper and associated with the figure. Of particular note in photograph are Fernando Campoamor, a good friend of Hemingway's and directly behind him to his left, the legendary Cuban boxer 'Kid Tunero' to Hemingway's right with his arm around, and Bolo de Nieve, famed Cuban jazz pianist to Hemingway's left.
