About this Item

Description:

[Science and Tech][Business and Industry] Edison, Thomas Alva. Signed Photograph, signed boldly in black ink on lower white margin: "To L.S. Hungerford, Thos A. Edison."Photographed by Walter Scott Shinn, N.Y. Signed studio portrait of Thomas Alva Edison, central architect of American electrical infrastructure and one of the most influential industrial inventors of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Edison s development and commercialization of the incandescent light bulb, phonograph, and motion picture camera helped catalyze the transition to electrified urban life and mass consumer technology. Inscribed presentation photographs of Edison functioned not merely as souvenirs but as instruments of professional affiliation within overlapping networks of industry, transportation, and finance that defined Progressive Era corporate expansion. Sepia-toned head-and-shoulders studio portrait 7 x 10 inches photographed by Walter Scott Shinn of New York, known for producing widely circulated images of prominent public figures in the early twentieth century. Edison is shown in formal attire against a neutral studio backdrop. Signed boldly in black ink along the lower white margin: "To L.S. Hungerford, Thos A. Edison." The recipient, L. S. Hungerford, served as Vice President and General Manager of the Pullman Company, manufacturer and operator of luxury railroad sleeping cars and a major corporate actor in American labor and transportation history. The association between Edison and a senior Pullman executive underscores the interconnected nature of electrical innovation and railroad modernization in the decades surrounding 1900, when modernized industrial labor reshaped America. Minor surface wear and slight edge handling; sepia tones remain strong and the ink signature retains excellent contrast and legibility. Overall very good condition. A historically resonant signed image linking two major spheres of American industrial development: electrical invention and railroad enterprise. Seller Inventory # 9519
