Earle's account of the frontier of undersea exploration as it stood at the close of the 1970s ? saturation diving, submersibles, the physiology and engineering of living beneath the sea ? written with the underwater photographer Al Giddings and illustrated throughout with Giddings's work. Published a decade before Earle became the first woman to serve as Chief Scientist of NOAA, and long before the public recognition that made her "Her Deepness."

The embossed Academy seal together with the Office of the Secretary letter mark this as a formal presentation copy rather than a signing-line signature. Sold with the letter; the two will not be separated.

Condition: Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Boards square, text block clean and unmarked. Accompanying letter Fine, with original folds.
