"It could be said that in Pierre Bellocq's cradle at his birth on November 25, 1926, the good fairy placed two gifts: a horse and a pencil. As precious as these gifts were, they only realized their potential in the hands of an attentive observer. The young Pierre was fully possessed of this talent for meticulous examination and thus we are indebted to day to Peb for a considerable body of work that relates the intense world of horse racing. He and I are contemporaries sharing the same memories, and were part of the small, bright world of French racing in our youth. During Pierre's career in France I followed his work closely, actually becoming a collector of Peb art, especially his caricatures, which I clipped from Paris-Turf and pasted in a school notebook. For caricature Peb took as his own the method used by Sem, the masterful artist of the early 20th century whose racetrack sketches and caricatures greatly influenced the young Pierre. Sem's explanation of his method, written in 1911, is included in Peb's autobiographical jottings. Few artists have so expertly portrayed the world of horse racing as Peb. Training yards, jockeys' rooms, paddocks, grandstands, betting halls, winner's circles, tiny offices of trainers and the great expanses of stud farms -Ppeb portrays all this vividly, with respect for the atmosphere peculiar to each scene. Raised in the world of horse racing, Peb knows it better than anybody." [from the Foreword by Guy Thibault] Just a sumptuous feast of Peb art in a handsome limited eidtion!
