FREEMAN, Don Don Freeman (August 11, 1908 February 1, 1978) was an American painter, printmaker, cartoonist, and an illustrator and writer of children's books. He was active from the 1930s to the 1970s and often used Times Square as the backdrop of his memorable works. His hot trumpet took him from Little Italy and the Bowery to Tin Pan Alley and his pencil recorded everything he saw. Don Freeman is no Alger hero and his is not a rags to riches story.
