This Deluxe Limited Edition Portfolio is hand SIGNED twice by both Jack Levine and James Michener in the colophon and on the inside of the clamshell box; limited edition of 2500 numbered copies (this is # 1552); first edition of these two portfolios; Part 1: Text by James A. Michener; illustrated with original woodcuts by Jack Levine; printed on Arches paper; the original "hors-texte" woodcut is printed on Japanese vellum paper, with 4 original lithographs signed in the plate by the artist, printed on Rives paper, loose - as issued - in a white silk portfolio with leather fastener. Part 2: The Sketchbook; with 54 watercolors, gouaches and drawings printed in phototype and pochoir processes on Ingres paper, from 2 to 40 colors were hand-brushed on each, in leather portfolio, Size: Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall; housed together in a white silk clamshell box with leather fastener; a few tiny creases to some of the tissue guards, just a little rubbing to clamshell box and almost invisible to the front and about 3 very thin and tiny marks to the back; otherwise the portfolios, text and plates in VERY GOOD COND.
